I recently purchased a 28 Honda CRF45R and after four hours of riding, took it back to the dealer for its first service. The mechanic at the dealership changes the oil and filter, check the valve clearances and check the tension of various part of the bike. I was charged $23 for this service and told that I would have to bring the bike back for servicing after every 5 hours of riding.
Well if this is true then it would cost me at least $6 an hour to ride my new thumper. This is not something I can afford to do so I asked around for
4 stroke dirt bike servicing cost
- MA international rider grants allocated
- Motocross racer dies after crash at Washougal
So, with that being said… should i just pick up a new 2009 YZ250 for riding? I am through with racing and it sounds like 4strokes are maintenance headaches?!
Hey Mike. I change the gearbox, engine oil and filter on my 450 every 5 hours and take it back to the shop every 15 hours. Honda sent out an amendment to the owners manual recommending that the oil and filter should be changed every 7 hours under race conditions.
I learned to ride on a 2 stroke and still enjoy riding them but the ones I’ve owned take a lot more effort to ride then the 4 stroke 450 I own now. It really comes down to what type of riding you expect to be doing, where and how often and whether or not that offsets the downside of more regular servicing of a 4 stroke compared to a 2 stroke.
